[alfa] 164S Suspension
Terrence Johnston's problem with the automatic suspension light on echoes a
problem that I had that was very hard to diagnose. I thought I had it fixed
when I found that the right rear tailight was allowing water to creep in and
appeared to mess-up the ECU connections. I cleaned out the area including
the connections and had the leak repaired but to no avail. I checked and
re-checked connections, fuses, relays, etc. (which means I forget what
else). In the end I was able to borrow a little gizmo that plugged into the
harness instead of the shock. It was simply a resistance that equalled that
of the shock when the shock operated properly. While the car was stationary
(you cannot drive with this resistor in place) a couple of strong people
rocked the car and found that while rocking the right front without the
resistor the light came on but rocking with the resistor the no light and
the ECU was fooled into thinking that all was well. Thus, the r.f. shock was
defective. Your local Alfa shop should have this resistor-testor. Ted,
Vancouver (actually Langley) BC.
(1991S with no suspension warning light on for several years but now have to
figure out why the ABS light sometimes on when I go over a bump I think.)
