RE: [alfa] Re: Breaker bar vs. impact wrench

Hi all -

Thanks for all of your great advice. I was able to borrow an impact
wrench, and the bolt came free without a lot of fuss. I'll be returning
my breaker bar unused - and I'm glad that you guys prevented me from
endangering the car.

The new crank seal was a bit of a pain to put in - but it eventually
went in with only a small amount of the rubber "squishy stuff" (as it
was called before) coming off in the process - hopefully this means
it'll work well now - but if I should be concerned about the small bit
of material, let me know.

I thought I remembered someone saying the torque for that bolt was
around 140, but my shop manual says 70-72 lb ft. Sound right? I put it
in with red loctite, and hopefully it'll be the last I'll see of that
bolt for a long time.

Thanks to all -

Shawn,
I will probably stir a hornets nest with this one 'cause it ain't
the
safest in the world but, I have on extremely tight front pulley nuts
that
won't come loose any other way, used a socket and breaker bar with the
breaker
bar braced against the car frame and then "bumped" the starter to break
it
loose.
Don't try to hold the breaker bar by hand. Usually, when the nut
breaks
loose, the breaker bar jumps off the frame with great gusto and could
hurt
someone trying to hold it.
Also, don't try this method on just any engine. Make sure the
direction
of rotation is correct for removal and not tightening.

Subject: [alfa] Breaker bar vs. impact wrench

Hi all -

I'm working on that front main seal replacement today. It seems like
people
prefer an impact wrench to a breaker bar, but I'm not certain if I can
find a
place to rent a compressor/impact wrench on a sunday. I thought I'd ask
people
about experience using a breaker bar to get off the crank pulley bolt.
My head
is removed right now, if that impacts any advice...

I've already fashioned a "cylinder sleeve tool" on the studs to prevent
the
sleeves from popping up. It seems like I ought to be able to lock the
crank by
putting the car in 4th and setting the hand break, and then just use a
breaker
bar... but I'm not certain. Any thoughts?

Thanks again,
_Shawn
