John, 
I may be way off base here, but it sounds like it might be a clogging fuel 
filter?  Your description sounds similar to something I experienced a long time 
ago.  Or, maybe something else related to fuel feed, like a faltering fuel 
pump/relay situation.  Sounds like it is time to go through a systematic check 
and elimination sequence.
