[alfa] re: places to stay in Carmel

I love Carmel. I try to find the smallest, most unusual accommodation
that most regular people (or as I like to describe them, the non
risk-takers) are not willing to accept, or even opt for different bed
arrangements. Two singles got a great rate one weekend in a motel on the
main east-west drag, during Pebble Beach weekend! I'd recommend trying
the B&Bs first. You might have to share a bathroom, but who cares when
they serve sherry at 4 in the afternoon?

I'd suggest doing a google on Carmel with a map pulled up to the side,
and call the places that look interesting. It adds so much to a vacation
to actually stay _in_ Carmel, where the air is so rarefied one can feel
one's pocketbook emptying as one walks down the street. If you stay _out_
of Carmel, then you still have to _drive_ there, which in and of itself if
you're driving a Spider can be very fun, but still is not the same as
being _in_ and gives you less time to stroll around and look at the
_other_ cars that are _in_ Carmel.

We did once stumble onto what can only euphemistically be described as a
flophouse (with bullet dents in the steel doors), but that was on the
outskirts of town in desperation at 11:00 at night after we had planned
to be in another city but couldn't make it in time (long story). I think
you're safe if you look on the Net ;-).
