Maybe it is because the oil is slightly hydrophillic, or at least
non-dispersant.   The metal working guys have the same rust problems with
fresh motor oil.  That's why they use oil designed for the job.

The "acid" test, pun intended, would be to measure the pH of the oil before
use and the pH after use to determine if corrisivity has changed and also to
what relative amount.  pH is a logarithmic scale and one step for example
from
7 - 6 is about 10 time stronger than the lower.  IMHO- pH for between 5.5 - 8
is close enough to neutral to keep most metals okay especially high carbon
cams, etc.  Aluminum obviously is a lesser strength metal allowing
corrosivity
to be more problematic.  Not a high worry item, but if you change oil at
least
once a year for your casual driver, I bet things would okay.  I have not seen
an engine fail because of corrosion.  But again, I'm just a personal mechanic
with experience(s) as my teacher.
