Re: [alfa] electronic ignition

Hi Jon:

I've been using a Crane XR3000 spark box and LX91 coil on my '74 Spider for several years now. The engine starts easier, runs smoother, and the ignition is just about maintenance-free (still need to change the plugs). I've installed the same for several Alfa-owning friends, with similar results. Parts are available directly from Crane:

Feel free to get in touch if you need any advice about the installation. It's fairly simple in a Marelli 103 distributor, or Bosch 044/045 (with single-piece points), but lots of work in a Bosch 041 (or other Bosch with 2-piece points). Be careful to match the spark box and coil as Crane recommends. The slightly lower-end XR700 requires a coil with a ballast resistor (like the Bosch Blue), while the XR3000 requires a coil without a ballast resistor. There are lots of other options, but on a stock or nearly stock engine, the Crane stuff works very well and doesn't require a new distributor or crank sensors, etc.
