Re: [alfa] More Motronic secrets!
Hi John:
The US Spider's from '82 thru '89 had the Bosch L-Jet, with Motronic
Spider's not showing up here until '90 (thru '94). I don't think the
situation was any different in other parts of the world, was it? As such,
the FI computer (analog) and ignition computer (digital) are two separate
pieces. I'd be glad to pop the rear deck in my '87 Spider to answer your
question, but before I do, are we talking about the same systems?

Subject: [alfa] More Motronic secrets!
Mr. Bosch will probably get a bit upset by this disclosure, but here
goes. It is covered
in their service manual for the Alfa Romeo Alfetta/Spider using the early
Motronic ECU.
This would be circa 1984 for Euro cars and about 1985 onwards for NA vehicles.
For those of you running the Motronic you might care to take a look inside
the ECU harness
connector to see if pin # 10 and pin # 5 are connected together. In the
Swiss version the
two pins are linked. This retards the ignition timing to meet their emissions
specification. The removal of the link allows more ignition advance
across the rpm range.
To open the harness connector, remove the nylon tie-strap where the
harness enters the
connector and slide back the pvc sheath.
Remove the small self-tapping screw holding the outer shell in
place. Slide the
shell off until the back of the connector is exposed.
Any American owners who take a peek, please let me know what you find!
Also, any one who can supply the Bosch part number for the ECU fitted to
the American
Spider? It should a number similar to 0261-200-xxx format and on a
sticker on the outside
of the ECU box..
