Setting the Wayback machine to the early 1980s, Blaupunkt may have had the
upper hand when it came to marketing hype and bells and whistles. This was
when it was de rigeur to install a "Euro" stereo in one's "Euro"
automobile. In terms of overall quality, I think John was spot-on about
Blaupunkt and Becker. What makes the picture seem skewed to Blaupunkt's
favor is that Becker (for whatever reason) never really contested for a
piece of the aftermarket automobile stereo pie, unlike Denon and even
Carver, who offered their own mobile units once upon a time. Mind,
Blaupunkt wasn't crap, but the Becker stuff *was* better. Good enough for
Mercedes, anyway.

If you look hard enough, you can still encounter Blaupunkt Berlin units
installed in pimptastic AMG clones or Italian sports cars ending with an
"i" where it's nigh impossible to reach the stereo in its regular "in-dash"
location. Their appearance is actually not so shocking since it's basically
how virtually all in-car cell phones were mounted only a few years later.
