RE: [alfa] V6 Valve Shims

Bert -

This was discussed sometime ago here. I was in the same position regarding
the V6 valve shims about a year and half ago when I was assembling an engine
for a customer.

Someone else here (I forget who) sent me a revised TSB that supercedes the
one you refer to which basically says it does not matter, you can use the
shims without the grooves in the V6 and all will be well.

I may still have the TSB somewhere, if no one else comes through with it and
you want to see it for yourself, LMK and I'll see if I can find it.

Subject: [alfa] V6 Valve Shims

Hi All,

I'm in the process of readying my "new" rebuilt cylinder heads for
installation on my '84 GTV6. After transferring the old cams to my new
heads, I measured intake valve clearances, miked the old shims, calculated
the required new shim sizes, and ordered new shims from International Auto
Parts. The shims arrived today.

My problem (?) is this: The new shims don't have the circumferential groove
that the old shims have. Technical Bulletin No. 89.01 calls for the grooved
shims that are "a different specially hardened shim for the 6-cylinder
engine" and goes on to say that the if a 4-cylinder (non-grooved) shim is
used, "it will fail". IAP's catalog doesn't differentiate between 4- &
6-cylinder shims - I would assume that if they stocked a universal shim, it
would be the hardened 6-cylinder shim.

I'll give IAP a call first thing tomorrow, but I'd sure like to get some
feedback beforehand regarding the 4- vs. 6-cylinder shim issue. Is the
Technical Bulleting outdated or have I gotten the wrong shims? Thanks.
