[alfa] Re: antique radios FM coverage

Just wanted to make a comment in regard to the German outfit that sells Becker, Blaupunkt, and other antique radios mentioned a week or two ago.

These radios, being German market radios from the birth of FM broadcasting, only tune the part of the FM band that was implemented in Germany at the time, that is they do not cover the upper 4 MHz from 104-108 of the US FM band. AFAIK Becker and Blaupunkt radios sold in the US have full 88-108 MHz coverage.

THe absence of the 104-108 MHz spectrum may bother some, although after the consolidation in the broadcasting industry following the 1996 deregulation, the only part of the FM spectrum I find interesting is the 88-92 MHz segment reserved for non-commercial radio.

In the interest of completeness in the discussion of antique radios, I will also mention that the upper end of the US AM band moved up a tad in the 1990's. The resulting space accommodates among other, some traveler information stations.
