Gorge Graves gave a great account of a number of things that could cause
dying and other intermittent problems. Somewhere in there might be the
throttle position sensor... Yet another thing that causes problems like
the engine dying on idle.
Try this for size: this last weekend I "resurrected" the GTV which was
in danger of becoming a shade-tree car. It had been parked out in the
open in all sorts of weather since April 2003 because of my involvement
with our racing programme and trying to keep up with work-type work, if
you know what I mean. In all that time, it had not been fired up so the
cam covers and other engine parts looked terrible with corrosion, damp
etc etc. Temperature outside was 50 degrees. I charged up a battery, and
cranked the motor over, I guess for maybe 1-2 minutes, intermittently,
so the carb bowls could fill up again with fuel. Then it fired right up,
on all 4 cylinders and the engine note was just pure music... :-) no
stumble, no misfiring, just the gloriously crisp sound of 4 open
induction trumpets breathing air. Hated turning it off again.
Now what was that about carbs versus fool injection? ... ;-) I have one
of those too, on the 75 (Milano) Twinspark, and it cuts out, is hard
starting most times, and compared with the GTV, the car has zilch torque
low down. Ok so I should fix it... Yeah right. I just take one look at
all that clutter under the hood and go and have another coffee..
Ciao tutti
