[alfa] Re: Bosch Spider won't start

Wayne,
You don't mention it, but I assume the engine is cranking over at normal
speed. As I recall, the individual injectors won't fire until the engine has
started (ie RPM > 500). Check your cold start injector (the blue one by the
throttle body). I find it easiest to just remove it from the manifold with the
wiring intact. Crank the engine and see if fuel comes out. If it does, your
problem is elsewhere. If it does not, then that's the source of your
problem. The question then becomes, why? No fuel pressure (remove fuel line and see
if it sprays!) or no signal (use voltmeter)?
If you are getting fuel from the cold start injector, then pull one of
the spark plug wires and crank the engine. See if you are getting spark. If
not, maybe the crank sensor or rpm sensor are broken/disconnected).
The fact that it stopped running in midstride is a little strange (it
wouldn't be caused by the cold start injector). So double check all the other
fuses. Check for tightness on all the intake lines. If the main hose is loose,
then the AFM will not be sending out the right signal to the ECU.
    Hope this helps.

Subject: [alfa] Bosch Spider won't start

Hi,
Here is the story. Last Tuesday as I was backing down the drive way I thought
"The Spider sure has been running well lately". Fast forward to the same
Tuesday after work. Turn the key and the Spider starts instantly. Pull out
of the parking lot and head for home. Somewhere around the fourth hill and
dale the engine stopped running. I coasted down the hill and managed to pull
over to the right and get the car off the roadway. I could not get it to
restart.

Since then I have checked:

Fuel in the tank
Fuse under parcel shelf ok
fuel flow out of tank pump
fuel flow out of main pump (all the way to fuel rail)
good spark, new plugs(just in case)
ignition signal makes it to L-Jetronic ecu
10.9 volts during cranking at L-Jetronic ecu

The complete 11 program, multi-step Bosch L-Jetronic tester sequence as
detailed in the troubleshooting section of the factory workshop manual.

the bosch tester says nothing wrong, still no start

The injectors just won't pulse.

Swapped in an 83 L-jetronic box

Still No Start

Any and all clues and suggestions are welcome.

Thanks
Wayne Abbott
