Thanks for the thoughts on the VVT in a performance environment.  I'd like to keep it if it's not totally contrary to the intended result.

However, your suggestion for checking the VVT performance doesn't actually apply to the 81.  The VVT setup on the 81 Spider is a unique bit of trickery.  Unlike the later variations, there is no solenoid at all - it's completely mechanical.  The front cover is (if I recall correctly) the same as all other earlier Spica injected cars.  The cam cover has extra space for the VVT intake cam gear, but that's the only outside indication that it's under there.

It's just one more of the bits unique to the 80 and 81 Spica engines, along with the single butterfly Spica bits and the dual pickup Marelli Plex ignition.  It seems Alfa got a little creative during the twilight years of Spica...
