[alfa] Re: Transaxle noise

Joe,
I'm not trying to be alarmist, but this reminds me of a problem I had with the Alfetta, except mine happened when on throttle rather than off. The big double ball bearing that handles the thrust loads on the main/pinion shaft had gone south. The play in the bearing alters the thrust on the pinion gear, hence the whine. When I finally pulled the gearbox and split the case, bits of bearing cage fell out and the balls looked like the moon. Granted, I drove for quite a while with the noise and it was a fairly substantial growl, more so than what I imagine you are describing. I say pull the drain plug and examine the oil and the magnet to see if there are any metal bits apparent, just to be safe. I hope this helps and I also hope that's not your problem!

Subject: [alfa] weird transaxle noise

I saw the new Harry Potter movie last night, and on the way home I noticed a fairly high frequency, but barely perceptable "wha-wha-wah-wah" coming from the back of the car, but only when I was off the throttle and the wheels were driving the engine. I figure it has to be coming from the diff. or gearbox, and probably isn't a good thing. I checked the gear oil today, and it was about a quarter inch low, by which I mean it was a quarter inch below the filler plug, which is probably insignificant. Anybody know what this noise is, and how worried I should be?
