RE: [alfa] The case of Missing Timing Pointer

Dennis -

Yes, the pointer is supposed to be attached to the water pump. My guess, is
that the water pump was replaced at some point by someone who was somewhat
careless and did not realize that you have to remove the pointer from the
old water pump and install it on the new one.

I've seen this a few times.

You should be able to obtain a pointer assembly from your favorite purveyor
of used Alfa parts for a few dollars. Since there is some adjustability on
the pointer, you will probably want to use a dial indicator or piston stop
in the number 1 plug hole to find TDC.

Jeff

Subject: [alfa] The case of Missing Timing Pointer

Hope some one can help...
I have a 1986 Spider Quad, and I would like to set the timing, but the
pointer seems to be missing. The marks are visible on the crank pulley but
no pointer to line up with.
I realize its a bit difficult to see, but I have searched and searched to no
avail. Is the pointer removable?
From my understanding the pointer is attached to the water pump, is it
possible that I have an aftermarket pump with no pointer? Any clues would be
greatly appreciated.
