Tony:

Is your speedo working? I had the cigarette lighter short out and blew fuse
7, which took out my speedo and the heater fan. Check fuses 7 & 8. It looks
like one of them is protecting the gauges.

Subject: [alfa] GTV as daily driver

I kept up an 83 for about five years as a daily driver. It was a
marvelous machine
and I often ponder just how advance it was for its time in both
engineering and style.
However, I (who consider myself to be and advanced amateur mechanic)
found I needed
considerable and frequent support from a good shop. (Paul at Defatta in
Baltimore, I worship
him like a god.) I sold it when the twins came along.

I have, however, kept the 73 Spider. At my technical level I find it
much easier to keep on the road,
part are easier to find, I can do more or my own work and it is frankly
more reliable.

You really got to love a GTV6 to keep it up.

Subject: [alfa] Autometer Oil Guages

I found the stock electric oil pressure gauge on my 73 Spider to be
worthless many years ago.
So I replace it with an Autometer mechanical gauge that fit right into
the console with a bit of
work. Problem was that engine vibration caused the copper sending tube
to fatigue right at the
fitting on the engine. This, of course, caused the engine to spray the
entire contents of the crankcase
all over creation, and if you don't happen to notice it, run the risk of
losing the entire engine.
That happened three times. First time because I didn't anticipate the
problem, second time because
I hadn't figured out how to solve it. (I did solve it by securing the
line to clamp on an empty bolt
hole on a carb. and then putting a couple loops in the line to absorb
the vibration) This last time it
went after I had some head work done and the mechanic didn't understand
the problem and I let
it slip.

Finally I have now discovered Autometer (available throughout
International Auto Parts at the tune of
about $65) sells a braided stainless sender tube. I just got it in, and
THAT is the final solution.
Anybody with a copper line might want to take a hard look at it and
consider the stainless as
an alternative.

Subject: [alfa] 1990 Alfa Spider Power Mirror Switch

I just purchased a power mirror switch on Ebay for my 1990 Alfa Spider. When
I took my switch apart, I discovered that the cables run about 2-3 feet and
disappear into the center console. The switch I purchased has about 6 inches
of cable and then a connector. Obviously, the switch I purchased on ebay has
a much short cable than the OEM unit on my car. Other than the cable length,
the switches appear to be identical. Does anyone know why the two cables
have
different lengths? Is my 1990 Spider different than other Spiders because it
is the last year of the 3 series body style? Any help in getting the replace
switch working would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: [alfa] 85' GTV-6 Rear Motor Mount

I have the sizes for the pusher and receptacle for a GTV-6 rear motor
mount as 2-1/2" pusher and 3" OD; 2-3/4" ID for the receptacle. Is is
possible to use a ball joint press to replace the mount in car?

Subject: [alfa] GTV6 Fans

I just realized I haven't heard the radiator fans come
on in a while. Here I'm driving around in 96 F weather,
the temp gauge reads normal but it's hard to believe that's
correct without any fans. The fluid levels are maintaining.
Maybe my hearing is just going?
