Re: [alfa] Carbon fiber Spider hoods

Hi Gwynne:

The "upward ding" in the hood happens when one bottoms the car, crashing the oil pan and/or sump guard into the pavement, lifting the front of the cam cover (oil cap, actually) into the underside of the hood. Another mode is when a radiator fan, the belt-driven type, shatters and one of the blades impacts the underside of the hood. In 25+ years of Alfa's, my Spider hoods have remained ding-free, but I always keep my motor mounts in good repair, always have a sump guard in place, and usually stiffen up the suspension.

I'm aware of all the arguments pro/con for the sump guard, but the one on my lowered '74 Spider seemingly has saved the oil pan enough times to justify its existence to me. It rarely hits pavement, though, as the Bilsteins have just about eliminated any suspension travel the Spider used to have. Koni's next time.

Regards,

Dean
