It is possible that if the clutch was replaced at some point in the cars
past, the shift arm was re-installed one spline off. This would cause the
left/right alignment of the shift lever off center which could cause exactly
the problem you describe.

You'll need to get under the rear of the car. Disconnect the shift linkage
from the 'arm' that is attached to the rod that comes out of the transaxle
(two nuts). Remove the single nyloc nut that holds the arm to the shaft,
pull the arm off, and reinstall rotating it one spline in the proper
direction. You might want to mark the arm to the shaft before you remove it
so you have a point of reference.

My new to me 82 GTV6 is really hard to get into first and second gear - you
have to go way over to where my knee wants to be (I'm 6'3") and even then
it's hit or miss.  Is this the bushing issue?  Any
suggestions/solutions/sources?
