[alfa] Change out of speedometer take-off at transmission

Im getting down to the short list of putting my 1973 Spider restoration on the road. The paint turned out nicely. Thanks to all on the list that helped with the paint code selection. The AR 103 Straw (ivory) looks great.

In any event I have a question about the speedometer take-off at the transmission. The one on my car had the square ID where the cable fits rounded off. So when I removed the speedometer take-off from the parts car (also a 73) to check it I was surprised to find it having a significantly larger drive gear. Does anyone know the reason for different size gears? Its logical to think its related to the differential ratio. I understand that Alfa made a change to the ratio in the later models and one of my transmissions may be a transplant from a newer car. Would it be that the larger drive gear goes with the newer differential? Is there a way to tell the difference by looking at the transmission with it in the car? As an additional curiosity these take-offs are quite different from the one that came off my 74 GTV, which is much shorter and has a one-piece shaft/gear.

Happy Roads, Al
