[alfa] GTV6 rear ended
Karl's disaster(I hope it's limited to property damage)causes me to
revive a thread I raised some time ago.In situations like this one, where
the Alfisti is not at fault and is looking to the other guy's insurer for
compensation.it's very difficult to get fair value for your car. Just
getting the adjuster to look at the CPI book value rather than
bluebook(why the hell is it yellow?) can be a chore.I suggest that Alfa
owners look to their local AROC clubs and/or Alfa garages for
WRITTEN appraisals. In order to protect yourself, take a series of
photos(like you would if you were selling the car on ebay),list all of
the repairs, upgrades, etc.,retain every receipt, and get someone with some
Alfa gravitas to appraise your car.Type up the appraisal, get 'em to sign
it and date it and put it with your important papers. Now you have
something to show the adjuster. In my 26 years of legal practice,I've
found that most adjusters are not ogres. They usually will respond to
solid documentation. You can download ebay auction prices for comparable
cars. Also asking prices for comparable cars on other websites. The key is
doing all this before the wreck.Valuation is a critical problem for
Alfa owners and the Digest is an excellent forum for bouncing around
ideas on this issue.Tort and insurance laws vary wildly from state to
state. Some states have no-fault auto insurance and I have no idea how
that affects this issue. The Digest has participants from all over the
country. We ought to be able to come up with a plan to help each other
out.
