The smell from the vents could be from bacteria growing on condensation in  
the A/C system; this happens on many cars.  It happen a very small amount  on 
our old 87 Milano, and revoltingly so on a 91 Honda Accord.  If this is  the 
cause, you need to kill the germs with something like Lysol.  You can  try, at 
first, spraying it into the vents (blower off, of course) and hope it  
penetrates to the afflicted spaces.  If that doesn't work, you will need to  start 
cracking into the dryer and tubes of the A/C, and anywhere the  condensation may 
go if it doesn't all drip out the bottom.
 
A friend and one-time AROC pres. once bought a beautiful GTV that had one  
foul problem: the former owner was a smoker and the cabin carried the smelly  
traces.  We gave her a bunch of lemons, which she scored (I think) and  threw 
into the car for a week or so.  That seemed to work.
