Re: [alfa] SPIDER ALTERNATE HOOD RELEASE

Harry:

Several years ago I was "locked out" of my '74 Spider's engine bay when the cable snapped at the end under the hood. I attached a noose to the end of a bent coathanger, and tried for about two days (honestly, two days) to snag the latch by working the homemade "tool" between the rear edge of the hood and the wiper valence panel. I can't imagine how any other method might work, though I've heard tales of releasing the latch from below. I hope you're not asking because your cable has already snapped, but if it hasn't, check it carefully and install that backup release ASAP. When I got my "new" "87 Spider home almost 2 years ago, the backup release cable was one of the first things I installed. I've only had a hood cable break once in 25+ years of owning Spider's, but once was more than enough for me.

Subject: [alfa] SPIDER ALTERNATE HOOD RELEASE

SOME WEEKS AGO SOMEONE ASKED HOW TO OPEN THE HOOD ON A SPIDER IF THE HOOD
RELEASE CABLE FAILED. THE ONLY ANSWER I SAW WAS TO INSTALL A MONOFILM RELEASE
CHORD PRIOR TO CABLE FAILURE. IS THIS THE ONLY ANSWER? IT IS A GOOD IDEA BUT
DID NOT ADDRESS THE PROBLEM SHOULD IT OCCUR PRIOR TO THIS INSTALLATION.
THANKS
HARRY
