[alfa] Timing chain tensioning
This is not really related to the durability issue currently being discussed
but it bears repeating on the digest about once a year. There are some
manuals out there (don't remember if they're factory or aftermarket) that
recommend adjusting the chain tension with the engine running. DO NOT use
this method! Quite a few otherwise healthy engines were toasted by using this
method which can allow the chain to jump time, particularly on an engine that
isn't running smoothly. Braden's bible describes the car-in-gear method
(don't let it roll backwards!) and the big honkin' screwdriver method, either
of which is a better option. See, even our beloved chains can have issues
with improper maintenence techniques.
