[alfa] good news/bad news

the good news is that this morning when i went out to check, there
was no 2" pool of water in the driver's footwell despite the steady
rain.

the bad news is that in heavy start/stop traffic on I-90 heading
into Albany this morning, i got rear ended "heavily enough"
on the Patroon Island bridge.

there's no question about it being entirely the idiot H***a
driver's fault. however, his insurance company is almost
certainly going to attempt a lowball on an 89 milano with
a touch over 100,000 miles, and ignore the fact that
it is a well maintained, clean florida car with a detailed,
documented history. i'm expecting a fight, them giving
way somewhat on the valuation but still calling it a total,
and buying it back for the salvage price if the incremental
cost of repair is within reason.

it would need both rear quarter panels, the sheet metal
is bent up into the panels behind the rear door glass.
the trunk is pushed under, but it appears the trunk lid
may be a survivor. a lot of the plastic bits actually may
have survived; i'm actually impressed at how much stuff
_didn't_ get damaged. everything from the rear doors
foward looks good, and the rear glass didn't shatter.
there is some angle on the rear wheels, but i suspect
that with the trunk and rear wheel arches pulled back
out, they'll square themselves up on their own.

so, are the quarters still available in the US, or will i be
calling southern/western junkyards looking for milanos
with front end damage? anyone know?

i'll go back through recent digests as we've had this
discussion in the past week or two, but if anyone wants
to bring any particularly good pricing resources to my
attention, i'd appreciate it.

thanks,
  richard
