Did Alfa believe in matching numbers of body to engines??
Rod,
Only in the most general way. You will not find an engine with the same
serial number as the car. That wasn't done in the postwar mass production era.
The best you can hope for is an engine of the same general series and time
period as the car. A book like Fusi's lists the engine numbers appropriate to
each year of production and series. It is not infallible, but is a very good
guide. In the case of the common engines used in GT Juniors, you have a broad
range to choose from as they were used across all model lines, however, you may
have a little trouble finding a 105 series 1300cc engine in North America,
since the cars were all individually imported and therefore "rare," You can
probably find a bunch of them in Europe.
But, unless you are going for absolute originality, why bother? You will be
giving up a good deal of performance and most people won't be able to detect
the engine swap unless you tell them.
Good luck,
Bob A.
