Hi Gwynne,
In my experience with my '91, the difference between the bottom mark
and the top was at least a full quart of oil, perhaps almost two.  I
never measured it accurately, just tried to keep it close to the top
mark.  I found that I was adding a half quart after every couple of
tanks of gas [but my car had over 135k miles on it so I always figured
that was not too bad].  YMMV of course.
