[alfa] RE: GTV6 transaxel ratios

I can't really comment on acceleration, because I only drove my GTV-6 for a few months with the 3.40:1 final drive, and it was sort of crippled for a couple of those months as far as hard acceleration was concerned (bad transaxle mounts). But I did make the following observations about the 3:40.1 final drive ('82) vs. the 4.10:1 ('84):
-When turning and accelerating leisurely from a stop sign or traffic light, I didn't feel silly leaving it in first until I'd completed the turn.
-Second gear provided 10mph per 1000rpm, which made it a very flexible gear for small-town (theoretically 25mph) driving--I never felt compelled to upshift to third on 25mph streets, nor downshift for slow 90deg corners.
-Fourth gear was good for country roads and urban freeways--it didn't feel wasteful to cruise at 45-60mph in fourth.
-Fuel mileage was better--the state of my car at the time was such that it was a matter of 17 vs 14mpg, but I've heard of people getting 32mpg from their well-tuned 3.40:1 cars (vs. ~28mpg).

Thanks to all that responded to my inquiry.

Those on the list that have owned both an 83 and 85 gtv/6 I would like to
hear your experiences with the cars in terms of performance. does the 4.10
gear ration in the 85 really make a difference? Further, did you find the 83
sluggish etcc.

Thanks in advance
