Re: [alfa] Re: 164 compared to BMW, and transmission repairs

My experience with transmission repairs on the 164 manual box is
limited to a rumbling bearing in a 1987 Lancia Thema Turbo IE which
used a similar unit. This appeared at around 180,00Ks and seems to
afflict the higher powered versions of these cars, whether through hard
driving or overload is a matter of opinion. The turbo four in the
Lancia developed 185 HP and a lot of torque for strong mid range
accelleration, inflicting punishment on the drive train. The repair was
no trouble to a Euro specialist in Dunedin, New Zealand and came to
around $1400 with a new clutch which seemed quite reasonable to me. A
rebuilt gearbox of uncertain provenance is difficult to test and always
an unknown quantity. They are quite repairable and I would recommend
this rather than trying the unknown.
