Re: [alfa] Trunnion Bushing Replacement
Chris,
I just went and looked at a spare differential I have and that "bolt" is
about a 10" long flanged double ender that runs all the way thru the
differential housing and has to come out the side the trunion mounts on. So,
in short, it won't work.
You need to jack the car up and support the body in front of the trailing
arms with jack stands and let the differential assembly drop down and hang on
the straps.
Remove the Left Rear Wheel.
Check the swaybar. That may have to be disconnected also. (Ain't got
none on my Duetto)
Leave the shocks attached, place a jack under the trailing arms, remove
the rear bolt and allow the trailing arms to swing down. (The shocks will stop
them and the springs will stay in place)
Disconnect the rear driveshaft connection at the differential and wire the
driveshaft out of the way.
Remove the nut that holds the trunion to the differential and push the
differential sideways (a helper comes in handy at this point) and raise the
trunion out of the way.
Now you can clean things up, replace the bushings and put her all back
together.

Subject: [alfa] Trunnion Bushing Replacement
I'm getting ready to replace the trunnion bushing on my '84 spider with a
new polyurethane bushing. I have read the archived articles for
installation tips. As one article said "it's a lot of work for a $15
part." Most articles recommend disconnecting the rear end (i.e., the
shocks, sway bars and trailing arms). But since the trunnion pivots up and
down why can't you just remove the nut that secures the bolt to the
differential, pull the bolt out, and push the trunnion up to replace the
bushings. Since it sounds to easy it probably won't work but why not???
Can anyone add some insight before I start this project.
Thanks,
Chris
