Today while driving in heavy stop and go traffic, the yellow "Anti Lock 
light" came 'On' and a little later the effort on the pedal was very 
light during 
the first section of the travel and very hard during the second part of 
the 
pedal travel, similar to the feel when you have air on the system.

The failure you experienced was in the ABS pump, not the MC.  The stop n go traffic caused extra heat to build up in your engine compartment, in addition to requiring constant operation of the pump itself, which ultimately caused the pump motor to..... pause.  After everything cooled off sufficiently the pump resurrected itself.  I don't think this means your pump is necessarily bad, just try to shield it from engine compartment/exhaust manifold heat.  
Also, avoid stop n go traffic.  Just drive around it.
