[alfa] Graduate Racer
Just finished with a visit with Chuck Midgley. Here is what he recalls. After
the movie Alfa sold one of the cars to Midgley and Griffith for one dollar
with the agreement to race it. Chuck is not sure if there was more than one
car for the movie but says they did receive another car from Alfa at a later
date. Again with the agreement to race it. The first car was # 93 and driving
was shared by Lee and Bob. The second car became #92 and was driven exclusivly
by Lee. Bob drove the #93(the Graduate) car exclusivly. The #93 car was later
sold to Ron Wunschel who raced it for a number of events and sold it after the
1968 scca runoffs to Dale McGowan. Both cars bore the orange and black color
scheme. Chuck further went on to describe the car as being "thrashed" when
they recieved it. Incidently, whoever out there in the L.A. area who bought
the white 66 Duetto from Chuck Midgley needs to know that the windshield in
that car is the original windshield from the "Graduate" car #93.
Biba, I understand your purist view and really do appreciate it. Perhaps you
can find some comfort in the fact that the car has not been lost or destroyed
but went on to achieve new heights after its Hollywood career and is still out
there being preserved by Mr. McGowan.
