E36: Low-end torque boost... How?

Hey all... I've a 1994 325iC and I'm trying to figure out what I can do to
get some low-end boost (without, of course, spending 6gs for a
supercharger.... though I'd love to have one!).
I've heard of swapping out rear-ends, but I haven't found (or looked hard
enough for) any information about this.

I've also heard that CAIs and bigger throttle bodies can make the low-end
torque going to opposite intended direction.

Any and all suggestions/ideas would be appreciated!
