I had the same problem.   Followed the Bently and could not get it out.  So 
I took it to my local indie shop - excellent shop in the Philly, PA area - 
and they clued me in.

That cup is part of a short (6-8") link.  The dealer sells the link for 
$10-20 or so.  This failure mode is common.

Real close.  You need to get the other end (cup) of the link off the motor 
crank ball and replace the link. I didn't see the repair take place, but I 
am told that it can be done without removing the assembly.  Supposedly you 
pull the wiper and the plastic intake grill on the driver's side, and use 
ingenuity and pry levers to snap and unsnap.

I snapped the end of my link back on and it held for another 6 
months.  Then I bought a new link. Ttried to put it in, failed, and paid 
$40 to have it done.  Ok, it was a busy week at work and my patience was at 
a very low point.

Also told that the ball the cup snaps on to is worn, so I have been gentle 
with the wipers.  Lots of Rain-X (oh please don't start that thread)
