Re: Octane Boosters - Advise needed

BMW didn't de-tune the engines so they'd pass US emissions. The chip is
programmed with fuel and ignition maps that limit the maximum amount of
spark advance, to prevent damage when using lower octane fuels.

The JimC chip provides more possible spark advance (among other things), so
they require you to use 92 or higher octane.

Regarding octane boosters, the simple answer is that they don't really boost
octane much, so they aren't worth the cost. Besides, the performance gain
from octane boosting beyond what the engine really needs (which is 92-93
octane), won't really provide much benefit.

I have a '95 M3 with JimC software/intake/Euro HFM, and normally run 93
octane. As a test, I filled the tank with 100 octane fuel (Sunoco unleaded
race fuel), and found the street performance to improve. But, at nearly $60
for a full tank, it's not something I can afford to do.

Octane additives only boost the octane ratings by a small amount. The 104+
brand of octane booster doesn't boost your octane rating to 104. You'd be
lucky to get a gain of 1 point. Not enough to notice, and certainly not
worth the cost.
