John,
You have a couple of choices I would think.
I'm not familiar with the instrument assembly you were describing, but it's
function sounds very similar to the way the Scout II series works. The
Scout II's (and various other later IH vehicles) also use a 5 volt Constant
Voltage Regulator. Probably the best all around long term fix is to
install a replacement solid state regulator verses trying to find a
suitable mechanical one. Any mechanical one you find will be at least 20
years old by now and it's only a matter of time before it will fail too.
I've been using the solid state CV regulator I made for many months now
(forgot when I installed it) and it has worked perfectly in all conditions.
The FAQ at the Binder Bulletin web site has instructions on how to add a
solid state CV regulator to a Scout II, but the principles will be the same
for your 80. The electronic regulator will be the same, only you will have
to decide how and where would be the best way to mount it, etc. The FAQ
you need to read is at http://www.binderbulletin.com/faq/4.htm#12.
After you read it, please feel free to e-mail me off-list if you have
specific questions and I'll try to help in any way I can.
Happy New Year,
John
