Re: Shifter boot, transmission tune-up

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone had a idea as to where I could get a
shifter boot for my 76 traveler (automatic) ? Any cars, Trucks out there
with one similar enough to use?

I just took the traveler into Cottman transmissions to have the
fluid and filter changed and they said they found trace amounts of metal
in the pan. Well, of course they told me that I should have it pulled and
disassembled for inspection ($450 if nothing wrong) or while its out have
it overhauled as well as the transfer case (new seals and cleaning) for
$600. I don't think this included any major parts like bearings, etc. I
told them no thanks for now since it has been running quite well.
Well of course now I'm a little worried since I was planning on
going to Ca. for either the Scout tour of Death Valley or the Western
Regionals. I would like to replace the seals since it does leak a little
(like most scouts). I can't afford $600 outright so... Is it real
difficult to service the Tourque flight tranny? or should I have a good
shop do it but save myself labor by pulling it myself? I'm pretty sure I
can do the X-fer case myself but I have no experience with automatic
transmissions. What sayeth thee ???

Many Thanks in advance
