Yes, they're much smaller. My impression is that they were used on most
or all 6.2L diesel trucks. They were used on some late '70's & early
'80's large GM cars too, but I don't know which ones. Maybe just the
diesels. The size is attractive because my engine compartment is much
fuller with the 6.2 than it used to be with the 196. :)
btw The 196 is still available. I'd love to get it out of Mr. Scout's
way. It runs fine but one cyl has only 75psi compression. It uses _no_
oil, though, so I tend to think it's a valve, not rings.

I just took it on sort of a "maiden voyage" to the store last weekend.
:) I haven't been getting it done very fast, too much other stuff to do
etc., but there are just a few rough edges to finish up now. OK, some
of 'em are VERY rough. :) The engine works great and seems to move the
rig along just fine. The trans (700R4) shifts slow and slips if I step
on it too hard, so I haven't been able to open it up and see what it'll
do. I guess it sat too long without fluid and the seals dried up.
Hopefully it'll get better with a little use and I won't have to rebuild
it right away.
There are probably better diesel engines to use in a Scout, like a
Cummins 4cyl turbo, but those are a LOT more money, and 6.2 parts are
everywhere. So far my only regret with putting in the GM 6.2 is that I
didn't get it finished a lot faster.
