It seems like it couldn't be too hard to make a frame out of channel
iron or something, and make it as strong & stiff as you want.  Do you
know if anyone's tried that?

How about making a whole new liftgate from a piece of Plexiglas?  Or
maybe polycarbonate, so it's bulletproof. :)  I haven't looked closely
at a Traveler top to see if it'd work, though.
