I had this SAME problem on my '72 shortly after I bought it. The old Holley
2300 2bbl needed replaced.

I swapped on a brand new Holley 2300 (7748 or 7744) 350cfm carb.. I had to
re-route the fuel inlet, and just like Dan, my choke was on the wrong side
of the motor!

I ran down to the auto parts store and bought a generic choke cable. It's
very easy to replace.. just thread it all through the existing holes, but
run it around to the correct side of the carb.

With it all mounted up in the dash, pull the choke cable *way* out. "tie
down" the outer sleeve in the appropriate brackets, open the choke all the
way up (move the arm as far towards the firewall as you can) and then trim
the outer sleeve.

Push the arm forward, then push the inner choke cable out. Now trim it just
past the most forward position of the choke cam.

Then hook things up. Now your cable is just the right length, with not too
much, and not too little.

As for the ugly black knob on the end of the new choke cable vs. the shiny
chromey knob on the old one...

The round knob was some type of plastic on my new choke cable.

I lit the propane torch, and proceeded to burn the nice new black knob right
off the end of the cable!

I then found a small drill bit, and drilled a hole through the end of the
calbe, where the black knob used to be. This area resembles a file (lots of
criss-crosses for strength).

I then unscrewed the set-screw on the original (chrome) knob, slipped it
over the end of my new cable, and screwed it down.

Works great.

It's not *exactly* a replacement.. the dash portion of the new cable is a
little different.. I can't remember what else was "wrong", but it's pretty
darn close.

Lemme know how much that runs, and how well you like it (everyone else
does).. I'm thinking I'll pick one up before I swap P/S into my '72..
