[ihc] Re: Crank Scrapers
The reason you want a crank scraper is to scrape off the oil that falls
from above off of the lifters and cam onto the rotating assembly, which
tends to twist with the crank as kind of an oily 'fog' for a while,
instead of just dropping straight down into the pan immediately. It is
not there to remove oil that is picked up by the crank kicking up oil in
the pan. (If the crank is hitting the oil in the pan, there is something
very wrong with your motor.) Removing this ropy spinning oil cloud does
several things. It reduces the amount of energy spent simply moving oil
around with the crank. (Think of an ice skater pulling her arms in, and
how her speed of rotation increases; or of how when the first and second
stages of a rocket are jettisoned, the second and third stages get a
boost.) It does not act as a shelf for oil to sit on, as the oil is
scraped off on the bottom side, and drips into the pan.
The scraper also helps keep the oil from foaming as much as it would
otherwise. In fact, this is exactly the thing the factory came up with
in 1973 to address the chronic IH low oil pressure problem. They
developed a crank scraper that mounted on the oil pan rail which helped
shave the oil off of the rotating assembly and get it back in the pan.
Part Number was 8000633-R91, and was called an oil baffle. It was
supposed to be used in conjunction with the newer oil pump with the
integral oil bypass, what was also called a high-volume pump. This was
addressed in Bulletin SLF73-35, SUBJECT: ENGINE. (I have JPG files of
this 3-page bulletin, if anyone wants it.) Their baffle was not quite as
ornate, but the function was the same. I think this is a good cheap way
to get a little more power and keep your oil pressure up, which just
about every IH SV motor I have ever seen suffers from.
$50 is not that much, but if you wanted to save some money, you could
make your own. Simply invert the block, and make a cardboard template,
and then after you make one that fits, use the template to make one out
of galvanized sheet metal. After all the time you spend doing this, I do
not think $50 is such a bad price for an item that most likely will cost
you about 3 hours to make yourself, and which will be better quality than
what you could make yourself. If I remember correctly, the 304 and 266
have shorter strokes than the 345 and 392s (I may be wrong here, and if I
am, I apologize), which means that the crank scraper will not do as good
a job on a 304 or 266 since there will be large gaps between the scraper
and the rotating assembly. Normally, the scraper is very close to the
weights and big ends of the rods in the 345 and 392, and a crank with a
shorter stroke will not extend as far from the axis of the motor, so
there will be more clearance between the scraper and rotating assembly,
which means the scraper will not be as effective.
I feel that folks ought to help support the fellow that is selling them
on eBay. He is located in Florida (Proudly Made in America!), and has
developed a product for IH, which almost nobody does. He borrowed a
motor from a fellow Binder owner in FL, and spent the time to design it
and make it available (several weeks from what I understand). If nobody
buys these, then we should not complain when nobody else develops
products for IHC. I have seen this time and again with other lesser
marques (like AMC). Folks complain about 'why is there so much stuff for
Chevy, but nobody ever makes anything for us?' Then when someone does,
nobody buys it, and then the manufacturer says 'never again', and then we
are back at square one where folks complain all over again about 'why is
there never anything for us?' Support your IH parts vendor!

IMHO, formed by talking to some more experienced IH hot-rodders.. save
your $50.
The deep-skirt IH block doesn't really put the crank much below the
bottom of the block, and the crank shouldn't be IN the oil at any point,
so it's not like you're going to kick up a bunch of oil and splash it
about.
I have yet to see frothy whipped oil in my race engine, and I run 7qts
in a 74 truck pan and flog it at 5,000+RPM for extended periods of time.
I did have some starvation problems running 6qts with a SII pan..
hopefully the 7qt truck setup will alleviate that problem and keep me
from wasting rods and main bearings every year or two (well under 1000
miles total).

- ---FWIW John, I believe a windage tray is just what the IH SV8 is
needing to
help keep the unused oil in the pan for pick-up rather than no oil in the
pan, all needed oil up top and unused oil all over the inside of the
block
walls. That FWIU is a little different from the item shown here, and this
item brings to me tone question regarding drain-down. Do I have to ask?
It
looks like one more ridge for oil to sit on preventing it from returning
to
the oil pan.
