John, I've never read "Diggin In and Piggin Out" or any of his scholarly
works so I can't offer any comments there. I was thinking of his tractor stuff
when I mentioned his name. I liked "Busted Tractors and Rusty Knuckles" best,
"Old Tractors & The Men who Love Them" and "Old Tractors Never Die" almost
as much.
These were more about his experience of going from an academic life and
background
to repairing something mechanical for the first time in his adult life,
enjoying the
challenge and repairing decrepit Allis Chalmers tractors for personal
satisfaction.
I know several people who might say they enjoyed "Love, Sex & Tractors" and
"Everything I Know About Women I Learned From My Tractor" better. These are
probably
more humorous and combine the tractor experience with his views and theories
about
the differences in the sexes and male/female relationships. Reading all of
the tractor
titles might get a little redundant but they were fast and fun to read and
I'll probably read
another if I see it.
Oh, I read "This Isn't The End Of The Earth, But You Can See It From Here"
which was more of a collection of short stories about characters he knows from
living on the plains. I think some of the people may have been his tractor
friends - its been a couple of years since I read it. I'd certainly read
more of his along this line also.
IH Content Compliance: I just remembered one of his friends had a Scout
or some
IH vehicle. It might have been in Love, Sex & Tractors but I'm not sure
right now.
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone, J. Michael
