Are there typical symptoms to a failed/worn out O2 sensor?

Our race car seems just a bit flat, despite recent rebuild.
After the rebuild it smoked quite a bit for the first couple of runs, then no
smoke at all, very little(normal) oil consumption.  Might oil have permanently
fouled the sensor?
