[alfa] Good Clean Power

All,
In a recent AD posting Will O. asked about a new cat for his Alfa.  This 
reminded me of a sentiment I wanted to share.

I've recently returned from a business trip to the mid-west where I spent 
several weeks.  Inevitably, I spent some time in traffic, cross-town traffic, 
red-lights and all that.  Being spring time in this hemisphere there was 
opportunity to have the windows of the rental car open.  A number of times I was 
struck by the foul exhaust, both visually and aeromatically, from my fellow 
motorist.  Frankly, I don't know if the states I was in have emission testing or 
not.  But after being spoiled by the clean exhausts resulting from California's 
regulations, I was thinking that these states aren't doing anybody any favors by 
allowing these machines on the roads.

Okay now for the Alfa part.  I often see postings to this digest about removing 
emission control equipment from vehicles (Alfas) in an effort (rightly or 
wrongly) to extract a 'little more' performance.  To this I say: do your family, 
your pet, or anything else you value on this planet a favor and don't do it.  
The gains to be gotten are really quite small and if you *really* have to have 
those extra beans, maybe you should consider a different steed.  The Alfa, (and 
many other marques) are engineered by smart folk, the likes of our own Eric S. 
comes to mind.  It is possible to produce good power and clean power.

Just so I don't give the complete wrong impression.  I admit to being a 
motor-head and definately do not shy away from tweaks to make my machine perform 
as I'd like it to (as long as it'll pass smog testing).  I also think it's 
ridiculous to outlaw/ban cars because they weren't manufactured with modern day 
technology.
