i cannot speak to Michael's assertion, although it would be
my expectation that a 3.0L milano should be able to beat
a base model 164 based on power to weight. the S motor
in the 164 would be a different can of worms entirely.

my experience driving a base model 2.5L milano at bmw
club driving schools was that, properly driven, it was quicker
than the 2.5L E30 series bimmers i was sharing the track with.
a lot was training and experience, i put my time and energy
into driving schools, rather than upgrades to the car, and i
think that setting my priorities in that way paid off handsomely.
i no longer own that milano, but i still have all the track
experience.

i can't speak to the newer E36 3-series, that's a different
car and i've never shared a track with one.
