The only foul smells I notice from car exhausts are the stench of rotten
eggs
that can come from catalysed cars. Most noticeable in the UK when fast
moving (motorway) traffic comes to a rapid halt and then moves off again.

Oil smells are rare nowadays, although diesel vehicles still regularly pump
out massive amounts of black smoke.
