Dave,
    Use the metal band only to hold the donut for assembly then take it off
once the bolts are all in.
    If you ever need to put a donut in and don't have the metal band, you can
make one by using a couple of screw type hose clamps hooked together.

I'm doing my first driveline rebuilt but have one question. The new
driveline donut has a metal band around it. The old one didn't. Does the
metal band remain after the driveline is reinstalled, or do I take it off?
