Re: [alfa] What year did 185x70 tires start?
Hi Gwynne:
Well, you got me curious, so I pulled out the old issues of R&T. They
tested a Spider in '77 with 165HR14 Goodyear G800's, Spiders in '80 & '81
with 165HR14 Michelin XAS's, and finally an '82 Spider with the new wheels
and 185/70HR14 Michelin XVS's. So, my guess (or recollection) was correct,
at least for the cars brought to North America. Interestingly, the Alfetta
Sport Sedan was fitted with the 185/70HR14's way back in '77. Carl
originally asked what year Alfa offered the wider tires as an option, and I
don't know that they ever did. Of course, when the Quad's came to the US,
15" wheels with 195/60HR15's became available, but that wasn't the original
question.

From the book "Original Alfa Spider" by Chris Reese - talking about the
series 3 Spider:
"The standard steel disc type (51/2 x 14), with open wheel nuts and
protruding center cover. The 2000 retained the wider section 185/70 HR 14
tires first offered in 1978"
I gather that he above refers to cars offered in the UK.

Hi Carl:
I'll take a shot and guess that the 185/70-14's didn't hit Spider's until
after the Turbina's were gone, as they're right on the edge of being too
narrow for that width tire. So, let's call it '82; first year of the
Bosch L-Jet Spider, and those new-style Daytona 5-spoke alloy
wheels. Make any sense? FWIW, I've got those same wheels on my '87
Veloce, and Cromodora repro's of the original Daytona's on my '74; both
with Falken 195/60HR14 Azenis tires.
If this is a real serious issue for you. shoot me a personal email, and
I'll be happy to dig up my copy of R&T's Alfa road tests, which has many
Spider's included, so the tire size change should be easy to find.

I didn't get an answer before, so will try again. Anybody know what year
Alfa first offered 185x70 as an option and what year they made it the
standard
tire?
