Actually, I shouldn't dismiss that possibility so definatively.  I know 
the clutch is nearing the end of it's useful life, and I've never 
expereinced clutch chatter before... so I don't know exactly what it 
feels like.

Let me go try it again, and I'll see if I can get a better description. 
 It's a bit difficult to get a good idea of what's happening, because 
the sound makes me wince.
