[alfa] hvac fan malfunction

Greetings digesters,

As 164 climate control is not my fortay, I thought I would throw this
question out there to see if any of you have had a similar problem and have
come up with a cure. My wife's 91 164 L has decided to give me its first
real failure in 110K mi. of faithful service: The blower fan has decided to
become intermittant. Normally with the system in auto mode , when the AC is
engaged, the fan speed rises sounding something like a 747 spooling up. Now
when the system is engaged, the lights for the fan speed move up the
buttons, but the fan doesn'r come on. My 15 year old son can sometimes get
it to work again by changing between manual and auto modes. The self test
result is "8U" "Open or short circuit between speed regulator and electric
fan." I just haven't had the time to run the tests. Any thoughts or past
experiences would be greatly appreciated.
