RE: [alfa] Twin Spark conversion for Alfetta

Stefano,

You absolutely want the twinspark from a 75 and not from a 164. Differences
are numerous. The 75 engine will drop straight in and bolt up, literally.
Same engine mounts, bell-housing mount, same flywheel, same heater and
radiator hoses, same sump pan. The 75 exhaust manifold should bolt directly
to your current downpipes. The intake manifold is located the right way
round, so it will take air from the front of the car.

The 164 twinspark is quite a different animal. The second distributor mounts
off the new 'back' of the camshaft, and will foul the firewall. The engine
mounts are different. The flywheel and starter motor are similar, but
different. Sump pan is different, and your standard Alfetta sump will not
bolt on to some castings without modifications. Intake manifold is shaped so
that it won't fit in the engine bay of your Alfetta -- it extends out as far
as the second distributor, and will also foul the firewall, even before you
try to attach an air cleaner or air box. Honestly, just don't go there. It
won't save you any money -- the engine will be the same price, whether from a
75 or a 164 -- but a 164 engine will cost you far far more in terms of time
and fabricating parts to make it work.

If you want to fabricate parts anyway, still start with the 75 engine, and
that way you'll be able to spend your time and money fabricating parts to
make the engine batter, rather than just to make it go.

The 24 valve 164 V6 will fit in a GTV6 or 75/Milano, but again, it requires a
good deal of fabrication. It's not a drop-in job. People do it because
there isn't a simple option of a rear-drive 24 valve V6. The twinspark there
is, and you should use it.
